Margie Dana Thanks for subscribing to Margie's Print Tips, written to build bridges between the printing industry and its customers. Here's to a glorious 2008. Today is special for two reasons. To my son Jacob, a very happy 13th birthday! And also this: today's Tip is #400. Yes, I have been publishing a Tip every Monday (give or take a few holidays) since September 1999. It must be love. Are you reading
this because it was forwarded to you?

Come meet old friends and make new ones! That's Amore This being Print Tip #400, I looked back over my Tip archives, scanning the headlines since '99, to reflect on their content and themes. What are the Print Tips all about? Theyre about providing helpful information about working with printers and with print buyers information you cant get anywhere else. The Tips dont discriminate. Each week I cover a graphics-related topic that seems relevant to print customers or manufacturers. Most of my Tips have been written with the buyer in mind - though many were written for an audience of printers and other service providers, to share buyer insights. I've covered basic printing processes as well as nifty specialties like hexachrome, thermography, engraving, foil stamping, and lenticular printing. There are tips about paper, ink, direct mail, and new postal rates (one of the most popular Tips of all times, by the way). Tips on file problems, PDFs, proofreading, working with Word, and how to write specs. A major theme of my Print Tips isnt a process or a technology. Its the people. One of the best things about working in this industry is meeting and learning about the people who make it happen. I've interviewed dozens of people for information on everything from the economy to why paper cracks. I've talked with scanning experts and print brokers, print CEOs and prepress wizards, hundreds of buyers and designers, and professors and other academicians. I enjoy speaking with behind-the-scenes pros like GMs and planners, estimators and spec reps, and finishers and envelope converters. Each person I've met is part of the fabric that covers all of us who work in or hang around the industry (like me). Each person taught me something. How neat is that? In 2008, I will continue to write about the people - the CSRs, sales reps, new buyers and seasoned ones, print CEOs, job planners, paper gurus and graphic designers. I want to interview the best minds and most creative thinkers in the business, and of course keep learning from customers of print. Another resolution? Visit more printing facilities. Plant tours are always eye opening. More than that, I love meeting print professionals. There is no way I could write a weekly column for this long if I didn't love doing it. Loco for litho? It's more that that. It is the undiminished excitement I get when I learn something new about a process or a technology in printing and related media. Then I get to share it in a Tip or a presentation. And that is not just zeal for one's work. That's amore.
