We'll kick things off where most
projects begin - at the desktop. Software has changed the way we think through
and execute every aspect of design and production for print and non-print
communications. And Adobe has affected each stage in our workflows, from layout
and image editing to illustration and PDF management. In this session, you'll
discover the latest trends - what they are, what they mean and how they impact
your work. Expects loads of examples and practical wisdom.
Presented by Christine Erna, Vermillion,
Inc.
What you think you know
about mail can come back to haunt you - as in the 9 billion pieces of mail the
USPS returns as Undeliverable each year. In fact, almost all the rules and
regulations have changed over the last 12 months. Discover what's new and what
you can do about it: how to improve delivery and increase ROI; how to reduce
undeliverables; what you need to know about the differences among letters,
flats and NFM (Not Flat Machineable).
What you'll take
away from this session:

Learn how to get more of your mail
delivered and increase your ROI.
-
Find out how you can help reduce the 9
billion pieces of mail that are Undeliverable by the US Postal Service
annually.

a letter, a flat and an NFM (Not flat machineable)!
Presented by Robert McClements

then there's negotiating for what you really want. Seasoned pro Robert
McClements will give you the insider's secrets on how to gain more value for
your money. Through a unique combination of technical know-how and behavioral
methods you'll learn how to maximize your buying power and manage supplier
behavior. Expect brainy insights and hands-on exercises.
Presented by Michael Riordan,

you get? Learn how to overcome the frustration of color management: how it
works; why it sometimes doesn't; and how you can manage your and your clients'
expectations. You'll discover basic workflow requirements and develop a better
vocabulary for communicating with creative professionals and printers to get
the color you want.
Presented by Rick Littrell,
President/CMO, Magicomm LLC
Print buying isn't
just about print any more. Many projects today cross the divide from print to
the Internet and CDs and other electronic communications. Explore the trends,
requirements, and technologies that you will be facing, including the meaning
of Cross Media, understanding personalized Cross Media workflow, the
significance of databases, and how to track ROI.
Presented by Don Carli, Institute for
Sustainable Communication
The meaning of
"green" or environmentally preferable printing is undergoing a widespread
overnight transformation that has been decades in the making and it has
profound implications for print buyers and companies in the graphic arts supply
chain. Green used to mean complying with the law and doing the right thing for
the planet, whether or not it was good for business.
The new green is based on a
conceptual framework called sustainability that is being used to redefine the
way business is done by Fortune 1000 companies. Increasingly, it will change
the nature of demand for printing services, printing equipment and supplies.
This presentation will provide you with an overview of the issues that you need
to consider and the steps you can take to address the challenges of
sustainability and climate change through your supply chain policies and
purchasing decisions.
Presented by Sandi Peterson
Press checks don't
have to be hellish. Find out what you should know and how you should
communicate when on a press check. You will learn the basic jargon and
practices - plus tips, hints and often overlooked secrets - that can make press
checks more effective and less burdensome.
Presented by Dr. Joe Webb
Printers, print
production coordinators, designers, and content creators face a whole new world
in today's communications marketplace. "Dr. Joe" will show them, and us, how to
navigate this new terrain successfully. He'll discuss global economics,
offshore printing, new media, digital printing, e-commerce, e-books, iPhones,
and everything else that's competing with print -- or opening new opportunities
for it.
Moderated by Margie Dana
Margie Dana serves
as referee as a raucous panel of print professionals engages in a
no-holds-barred discussion of the good, the bad and the ugly in today's print
buying world.
Presented by Daniel Dejan, Sappi
Fine Paper
Graphic arts
educator and creative specialist Daniel Dejan will cover the three stages in
the life of a file: planning, preparing and releasing. You'll learn how to
overcome frustrations and make great designs that print the way you see them on
the screen. Anyone who creates jobs for printing will benefit from Daniel's
hard-won lessons!
Presented by Cheryl Kahanec
Remove the veils of
mystery! Industry expert Cheryl Kahanec reveals the inner workings of variable
data printing - and how you can apply the technology to your advantage. She'll
share her industry insights, real-life examples and practical know-how and show
you ways your business can benefit from VDP.
Presented by Bob Wagner
Bob Wagner exposes
and debunks the top urban legends that plague digital printing. Discover what's
really going on and how the opportunities have expanded - to your advantage. By
session's end, you'll know why digital printing is more targeted, more
effective and more relevant than ever.
Presented by Nick Patrissi and
Derek Awalt, Kodak
Graphic Communications Group
Proofing just isn't
what it used to be. New expectations, terms and technologies such as
just-in-time, time-to-market, print-on-demand, better-faster-cheaper, and
global networks require that we reevaluate the way we have traditionally done
things. This session will bring you up-to-speed on the latest in proofing
technologies, their impact, and the all-important integration among the agency,
client, prepress, publisher, printer, and even the pressroom.
Frank
Romano and
Dr. Joe Webb
Frank Romano goes
toe-to-toe with Dr. Joe Webb
They've been called brilliant,
visionary and forward-thinking. But no one has ever accused them of being shy!
Enjoy dinner among your colleagues as Frank Romano and Dr. Joe Webb - two of
printing's leading authorities - debate the direction and meaning of print
today: where it's going, what's at stake, how it will change, who will be the
vanquished or the victors. Dr. Joe will bring graphs and charts; Frank will
respond with wit and charm. Neither will pull any punches. And with all the
insights you'll certainly gain, you're bound to walk away a winner.
Presented by Frank Romano
Join print legend
Frank Romano as he takes us on a very personalized and provocatively
opinionated trip through the world of digital and variable data printing.
Uncover the real potential behind what they can do - and the hard truths about
what they cannot. Take advantage of systems nuts-and-bolts details and how you
can apply them profitably.

language of printer equipment lists. Professional print buyers share their
savvy to help you determine whether the described equipment is appropriate for
your requirements, allowing you to make smarter service choices.
Presented by Daniel Dejan, Sappi
Fine Paper
Follow Daniel Dejan
in his pursuit of factors that significantly affect the outcome of the printed
image: color gamut transitions, such as photographic film to the RGB monitor to
the CMYK print window; tonal compression and the "matching the transparency"
frustration; and neutral gray tone reproduction. Workshop includes handouts and
Sappi's "How to Read a Press Sheet" booklet.
Margie Dana brings
